Details

The following describes how "an empty page will be created for your scripts to run in" "if you specify only 'scripts'":
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Add-ons/WebExtensions/manifest.json/background

Now the location bar shows results like the following for each such webextension:
xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx moz-extension://xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx/_blank.html

You can find such results easily by entering the following in the location bar (after installing a webextension):
moz-extension

I don't know whether non-empty webextension pages also show up, or whether they should.
actually, it looks like this is an issue with these pages getting saved to the history and so isn't a problem with the location bar
Component: Location Bar → Bookmarks & History
Summary: webextension empty pages show up in results → webextension empty pages show up in history
we should probably exclude this scheme from history.

this issue appears to be fixed since at least 51.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:58.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/58.0

Nope. Still an issue.

Going to dupe this forward to bug 1658229 as that contains more information and side-effects.
