Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:48.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/48.0
Build ID: 20160728203720

Steps to reproduce:

An event arrives on account B. I respond with accept or reject.

Actual results:

I'm immediately asked for the password for the SMTP server on account A. This is a mistake. Email to account B cannot be sent through the SMTP server for A in the general case. And even if it can, there are confidentiality reasons why it should not be.

Expected results:

The responses should be emailed back to the SMTP server associated with account B, the account on which the event invitation arrived.
This is on lightning-5.2a2 on Earlybird-50.0a2 (2016-08-26).
Have you made sure to have assigned the respective email identity to the calendar the event is stored in? If you haven't, Lightning must fall back to the default account.

Uh... I loaded lightning. I ran thunderbird. An invitation arrived. I declined. It tried to send email that would have been an embarrassing debacle and might have gotten people fired if I had already typed in my password for that smtp server. That's a serious gotcha that should not be allowed to happen without at least one or two dialogs warning me what's about to happen.

I don't know what you're talking about with respect to email identities and calendars and events. I'll figure it out shortly, but I shouldn't have to know all of that in order to defend myself from an embarrassing incident like this.
Open the properties dialog for the respective calendar from the list in the calendar view. Assign the appropriate email address from the list to the calendar. For best user experience, if you have multiple email accounts or you have multiple email addresses configured for one account consider to create seperate calendar for each of it your expecting to deal with invitations.
