User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:48.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/48.0
Build ID: 20160728202151

Steps to reproduce:

When I am travelling writing mail on thunderbird quickly discharges my computer's accumulators if my internet connection is flaky:

Every time the throbber appears (for example if thunderbird tries to connect the net in order to save a draft) this causes a high CPU load. Don't know if it is the throbber or the progress bar, though.

Am using thunderbird 8.36.0 on linux.

Actual results:

Either the trobber or the progress bars use considerably high CPU power, as long as it is displayed

Expected results:

I would expect a throbber and the progress bars to be either updated by a mechanism that doesn't involve the CPU too much - or to be updated only a few times per second. If it is the progress bar I would expect it to be only redraw if the progress bar actually did move by at least one pixel. Don't know which of the things I claim to expect currently doesn't happen.
