The "Wait" button in the "A web page is slowing down your browser. What would you like to do?" dialog seems to be not consequent

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:49.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/49.0
Build ID: 20160928160550

Actual results:

If I‘m not wrong the old dialog that appeared if a script run too long has paused the script until the user has decided to stop or to continue it. This had the disadvantage that the user had either to continue manually multiple times on long running scripts or to give them a longer/(temporary) infinite timeout which could cause problems too.

The new "A web page is slowing down your browser. What would you like to do?" dialog continues the execution of the script while it shows the buttons "Stop It" and "Wait". This eliminates the disadvantages from the old dialog and clicking "Wait" does cause the dialog to reappear after a few seconds if the script is still running.

I actually wonder why the "Wait" button does exist there as doing nothing does already wait for the amount of time the user wants (and even potentially an unlimited time like the related checkbox from the old dialog caused it). The only difference is that the dialog does disappear for a few seconds which doesn‘t seem to be a real advantage.

Expected results:

The "Wait" button should be removed as the dialog seems to provide without it a clearer user experience without losing functionality.

I disagree. The popup often appears for no perceivable reason. The Wait button should be retained and its behaviour should be modified to dismiss the popup and ignore the condition until the tab is closed.

Absolutely.

The warning is a nightmare. It also seems to prevent a page refresh with F5 as well. No option but to close and reopen the tab.

Driving me mad.

Not sure why this bug is in JS Engine when it's about a warning in browser chrome. Asking FFx team to re-triage this.

I saw a report in the last few days indicating that this was, in fact, due to a resource shortage - unfortunately I didn't bookmark it so I don't recall what parameter needed adjusting.

This yellow-bar defect STILL EXISTS in the 65 branch.

Behavior persists in 65.0.1.

Is anyone paying attention?

EFFECT: Anyone with an older machine effectively CANNOT upgrade to 64+ and probably needs to downgrade multiple versions.

(If I had a way to downgrade to a substantially older release, I would. Does NOT seem to be a problem with current Chrome releases.

(Chrome of course does not HAVE this LONG-STANDING Firefox-unique DEFECT to begin with.)

How to get this issue in the correct queue?

Flags: needinfo?(dolske)

FWIW, I’m running 66.0a1 and the issue is still there.

This bug is CRIPPLING my use of Firefox. Relatively new to bugzilla - what am I doing wrong?

NO PROGRESS - TIME TO DUMP FIREFOX??

WHAT IS THE PROGRESS PATH-FORWARD?

DEFECT IS EASILY REPRODUCIBLE ON COMPLEX SITES LIKE FACEBOOK. (My clients are increasingly PO'd at Firefox.)

triage-deferred does not SEEM like an appropriate status for a years-old defect!!

Be careful with your language. Some people here can doctor the comment thread. They can make you say things and then delete their comments, making you look bad. This has happened to me. This is not a safe space.

Please do no repeatedly needinfo people, and your behavior is becoming abusive.
