Switching to Vertical View layout causes standalone message window to go blank [Mac]

If I have some messages from my Inbox open in standalone message windows, return to the 3-pane window, switch View > Layout > Vertical View, then return to one of the standalone message windows they are blank.

Switching back to Classic View doesn't fix things. I have to restart Thunderbird.

I can't reproduce this on a recent Daily (4th Jan.). I opened two message in separate windows, then changed the layout to "Vertical View". The separate windows are still as they were.

you should state your version, and that you tested in safe mode.

macOS 10.12.2; TB 45.6.0; still happens in safe mode.

This was the first time I tried it so I've no idea. I don't have a pre-Sierra machine to test with either.
