Nightly builds after the 0.9.9-Release/Win32 show a strange and annoying
behaviour: Although Quick launch is *not* enabled -- wether in the
Administrators' profile nor in my personal profile, Mozilla automatically starts
after being logged into the users' profile. Worse, it even persists in being
started, if I exit Mozilla or kill the process: after one or two minutes it
auto-starts again!
I am also seeing this behavior on XP Home, using Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U;
Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:0.9.8) Gecko/20020204 Build ID 2002020406. I have
QuickLaunch off, and Mozilla is not in my start menu, but it starts anyway when
I boot, and if I close all the windows, after a minute or two it starts up
again, displaying first the Mozilla splash screen then a browser window pointing
to my default home page (still set to default www.mozilla.org/start). I don't
believe I have any virus on this system (
can you try again with a newer build ?
Yes, I now  have Mozilla 1.0 Release Candidate 3 Mozilla/5.0 (Windows;
U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.0rc3) Gecko/20020523 Build ID 2002052306.
I was running with QuickLaunch enabled to stop this behavior. I just
tried closing Mozilla and stopping quick launch, and the same thing is
now happening again. With Mozilla stopped, Windows task manager does
not show Mozilla running. Within a few minutes, Mozilla starts again by
itself, beginning with the Mozilla splash screen then a browser window
pointing to the home page http://www.mozilla.org/start/1.0/ (my
default), and Mozilla appears again in Windows Task manager. This build
has the same problem as before.
i couldnt think of anythink mozilla internal that could make it start after a
time on its own. can you look into your task scheduler please.
I can't imagine how it can start itself either.
Scheduled Tasks has:

1. Norton AntiVirus - Scan my computer (C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NAVW32.exe
/task:C:\DOCUME~1\ALLUSE~1\APPLIC~1\Symantec\NORTON~1\Tasks\mycomp.sca) 8:00 PM
Friday
2. Scheduled Snapshot (C:\CFGSAFE\SCHWIZEX.EXE -SNAP) 8:00 AM Monday (see
http://www.imaginelan.com/configsafe/index.html)
3. Symantec NetDetect ("C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\NDETECT.EXE") disabled

I found what's causing this by shutting down programs one at a time. It
stopped when I closed my keyboard Rapid Access driver.

This is caused by the driver for my IBM Rapid Access Keyboard III. This is a
USB keyboard with extra functions, including Email and Internet buttons, and
an Email light that blinks when I have email. I think the keyboard driver is
invoking my default email application (Mozilla) to check for email so it can
blink the light. When the keyboard driver invokes Mozilla, Mozilla opens a
browser window.

You can find the keyboard driver here:
http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/MIGR-40226.html?lang=en_US&page=brand&brand=root&doctype=&subtype=Cat&up=unknownuser1004106089
My keyboard is like this one but without the USB hub:
http://commerce.www.ibm.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce/ProductDisplay?cntrfnbr=1&prmenbr=1&prnbr=22P5185&cntry=840&lang=en_US

Perhaps you can find a way to allow this keyboard driver to check for
email without opening a browser window.
This looks like this is a fault in the keyboard driver, not mozilla. There may
be an option to disable the "automatic mail checking" within the keyboard
driver. In any case, please mark this bug INVALID.
There is no option in the keyboard driver to disable checking for email (other
than to remove the driver completely which disables all the extra buttons for CD
player, etc.). The only other fix is to enable QuickLaunch in Mozilla, then
browser windows don't open unexpectedly anymore. This is only a problem with
QuickLaunch disabled. If you are going to leave this as-is, maybe there could
be a FAQ entry about this problem somewhere.

I don't see this as a problem in either Mozilla or the keyboard driver, but
rather as an incompatibility between the two. Since Outlook seems to have a way
to be queried without opening a window, they keyboard driver may be using some
special call to the mail program. Maybe you could trap this call and see if you
can recognize this case and also avoid opening a window. This would require
installing the keyboard driver, which may require having this keyboard attached.
Otherwise, the only way to use this keyboard with Mozilla is if QuickLaunch is
enabled.
I have downloaded a new driver for this keyboard from IBM.
This driver fixes this problem, Mozilla is not launched by the
keyboard driver anymore.

I agree that this bug can be marked INVALID, but if there is
a FAQ or problems list that you could add this to it may help
other users. The fix for this problem is to get the latest
keyboard driver for the IBM Rapid Access III keyboard.
Someone mark this INVALID please. The original bug sumitters have asked for
this as well.
