Several times I have found myself opening a link in a new tab behind the current tab with the intention of continuing to read at the current tab until the new tab is fully loaded, and then immediately switch to that tab. It would be cool if we had some way to tell Mozilla to automatically switch to the new tab once it is finished loading. Ctrl+Alt+click, perhaps?

um... let's not involve Alt here. That's often used as a windowmanager shortcut key (and in fact ctrl-alt-click is a common windowmanager command to more or lower or raise windows)

I suggest WONTFIX. Press ctrl-shift if you want to read the new page, and put up with the few seconds of delay. :-) Or, we could make the ctrl-shift behaviour be what is described here, and do away with the current ctrl-shift behaviour.

WONTFIX. It would be unwise to change the ctrl+shift behavior to this since many would assume it to be a bug ("why doesn't the new tab get focus until several seconds after I clicked the link?"), and as bz says, there aren't too many key combinations left to take from.
