Details
Currently the translation stats uses string count which is IMO not very helpful, since some strings can be very long and others are only one or two words. Using word count gives more realistic estimate about how much work done and how much is remaining.

Hi, I marked this is a duplicate of an existing bug. There was a PR (https://github.com/mozilla/pontoon/pull/310) but unfortunately We closed it because of inactivity. I can try to help if you want to contribute this feature.

Just wanted to add that I see many use cases where word count is useful. As pointed out in bug 1219431, we should include both numbers (string count and word count) in all places where we display stats and come up with a consistent UX to switch between the two.
