If you have a news account in the collapsed state (e.g., no groups in the
account showing), the Get Msg button, Next, etc. are disabled as they should be.
Now, if you expand the account (by clicking on the "+") so that you see the tree
view with your subscribed groups in it, and then select a group that has unread
messages in it, Mozilla does not activate the disabled buttons until you click
in the message list pane.
Here's an even easier way to reproduce this.

1) Get your new account displaying in the folder pane with the newsgroups list
expanded.
2) Select "Local Folders"
3) Select a newsgroup.

Result:
Get Msg disabled and Next is disabled even if selected group has new messages.

Expected:
Appropriate buttons are enabled.

PS - Clicking in the message pane or the thread pane is required to activate
buttons. It is not only the thread pane that will activate buttons as previously
stated.

Jerry, this works for me with Moz1.4 on Win2k and with a current nightly
(different profiles, one with classic, one with modern theme).
Can you still reproduce this?
With a _clean_ install and new (test-) profile?
