I really like having the download information appear in the sidebar, but I run
without the sidebar for most of the time, and just open it when downloading to
see the status.

For me, width of the window is much more important than height. I run windows
at about 800 wide, and having the sidebar open temporarily takes a large swipe
of window away.

Could the sidebar functionality be evolved to allow the sidebar to appear at the
bottom or top of the page (or even to allow the side bar to be detached)?
hyatt has said that maybe in the distant future, post 1.0 that Phoenix might
support moving the sidebar to the right side of the screen but not to the top or
bottom. Something like that should be implemented as an extension at mozdev or
elsewhere.

Fair enough.

It's a shame, a bottombar would be far less invasive than a sidebar, but so be it.

I think I have seen some CSS hacks you can do to move the sidebar to the right,
maybe it will work to move it to the bottom or top as well?
