User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.1) Gecko/20020826
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030312

While the browser or mail & newsgroup reader are open, I get polled for the
Master Password seemingly periodically. This happens even when I'm not at an
encrypted site. I have set for the Master Password to be requested "the first
time it is needed". This bug did _not_ occur in Mozilla 1.2.1 or older, and it
_did_ occur in one of the 1.3 betas.
Quick launch is enabled.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open the browser or mail & newsgroup reader
2. Wait a while
Actual Results:
The mail & newsgroup reader requested the Master Password after ~15-20 minutes

Expected Results:
It shouldn't have displayed the Software Security Device master password prompt.

I can confirm this in Linux nightly build 2003051822 (as well as earlier
builds). I have two e-mail accounts plus nntp account, and no passwords of those
are stored in PSM.

After starting Messenger, typing passwords for both mail accounts and waiting a
few minutes the prompt for master password will come up.

If I press cancel and wait, the pop-up will come up again.

If I at any phase (either at this prompt, or go to a site with stored user/pass
causing psm to ask master passwd again) enter the master password the pop-up
will go away.
This might be related to bug 185786. Still, the bug happens for me without any
automatic checking of a mail or news account. Mozilla just pops up the master
password dialog for no apparent reason.

Bug 211258 might be a dupe or related.
Update:
Now I am using Windows 2003 Server and Mozilla 1.4 (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U;
Windows NT 5.2; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624) on PC#1, and Windows XP and MZ
1.4 (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624) on
PC#2.
PC#1 never experiences the bug (I don't use the Mail & Newsgroups reader there),
but PC#2 does when I open the Mail & Newsgroups reader.
The Mail & Newsgroups reader accounts are as follows:
- 1 SMTP server with unspecified port number, ticked "use name and password",
user name filled, and SSL set to "When available".
- 1 NNTP server set to check for new messages every 3 minutes

Changed the NNTP account to check every minute, and the Master Password dialog
fires up accordingly, even though I do not get asked for a password at startup
or when requesting a manual "get new messages".
Comment #4 leads me to th conclusion, that Bug 211258 is no dupe of this one,
since I don't use Mail and Newgroup-Reader at all.
Confirming for current Linux CVS build.

I (PC, Windwos XP home) am experiencing the same problem in Mozilla 1.7.1 (as
was the case with Mozilla 1.6). I get prompted for the master password, whatever
the timeout setting. I do not use the mail program. Location bar shows
about:blank, history, mem and disk cache and location bar are all cleared.
Sometimes I have to repeatedly hit the Esc.button to get rid of the dialogue
box. There doesn't seem to be any regularity in the pop-ups: sometimes the
pup-ups are seperated by minutes, sometimes only by seconds.
This is probably a dupe of bug #247417 - and should therefore be fixed in
current nightlies.

Marking WORKSFORME - please reopen if you can still reproduce the problem with
a current nightly.

I am experiencing the same problem using Mozilla 1.7.3:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040913

Comment #8 suggests that this bug should have been fixed as of build 20040818 or
earlier, so i am reopening it.

The password window pops up every ~10 minutes. My setting under "Master Password
Timeout" is "The first time it is needed".

I actually experience this bug with only the browser open (i do not use the mail
& newsgroup reader) so this is similar to bug 211258. However, i *do* use the
mail compose facility, and i observed the following: When i start the mozilla
browser and let it sit there unused (displaying my bookmarks page), the bug will
not occur. So perhaps it gets triggered only when i start using the mail
composer. However, i have not rigorously tested that. I'd be happy to, if there
is interest. Thanks.
(In reply to comment #9)

This is exactly what I am experiencing. No problems, so lang as I use the
browser only, but after opening Mail or my Address Book, the master pass word
window keeps popping up. I have to close Mozilla and reopen it to get rid of
the bug.

[Mozilla 1.7.3 (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; nl-NL; rv:1.7.3)
Gecko/20040910)]
(In addition to comment #9)

I performed a clean install of Mozilla 1.7.3. I uninstalled and rebooted prior
to installing 1.7.3 (all applications closed, all security devices off, no
connection open), as Mozilla suggests. But I still get prompted for the master
password after I have opened Mail & News or the Addressbook. When I just use the
browser, there is no problem. Some 10 minutes after having opened Mail or
Addressbook I get prompted for the master password. This is repeated every 10
minutes or so. No matter what I do (give the password or pressing Esc.) .
Preference for master password prompt is set at "1st time needed", but other
possibilities make no difference.

Reproducible = Always
Steps to Reproduce = 1. Open browser and open mail & newsgroup reader or
addressbook/ 2. Wait a while/ Actual Results: the master password is requested
after ~10 minutes and after that at ~10-miute intervals.
Expected Results = it should nót have displayed the master password prompt.
