Works for me for the following builds on Debian unstable:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.4a) Gecko/20030422 Firebird
Browser/0.6
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030312
and also
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.4b) Gecko/20030422
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030327 Debian/1.3-4

There is no crash, but the file gets displayed as if it was a text/plain file.

Reporter, can you reproduce this on a recent build? Or with a fresh profile? You
should also consider using reportbug on Debian for that specific package.
worksforme with linux trunk CVS/gtk2/xft (some garbage glyphs displayed, but no
crash)
you might be seeing bug 175108

if you start Mozilla from a terminal, do you see any messages when it crashes?
