Details
We need to clear the new flag on messages when reading a message or closing a folder. to see this, set up pop mail filters, and read the message in the target folder - the "new" status will not get cleared on the message

works now, probably as a result of fixing the other new problems.
Reopening... this is not working in jan20 morning m13 commercial builds on linux 6.0 and NT 4.0 (haven't yet tried Mac). When the (POP) message is filtered, then I read it in the destination folder the bold lettering and green diamong go away, but the status column stays at "new". That "new" indication in the status column doesn't get cleared even after exiting and coming back to the previously read message. (Note: because of weirdness I've been seeing with POP attributed to bug #23755, I tried this filtering both with putterman's new .js file and without. In both cases, the new status doesn't go away.

hmm, well, I'll try it again. It did work for me once.
Target Milestone: M17
Another thing noticed with POP filtering using today's commercial build (win32) is that the status column doesn't get "new" if you're viewing the destination folder when you get the message(s). Bold, green diamond appear, but the status column is blank. If you read the message, bold/green are removed and the status column THEN changes to new.

Scott might have a clue why that is.

I don't know. But if you want, you can reassign it to me and I can look into it.
I assume this is another scenario to show the problem (if it isn't let me know to log a separate bug): Noticed today in mar23 beta builds. 1. Select a read message in IMAP Inbox. Message pane is open. 2. Mark the message Unread via menu item or click on green diamond in thread pane. 3. Go to another message, then navigate back to or select the message you marked unread. Result: it doesn't get marked read unless you use menu item Mark as Read. This lasts throughout current mail session. Exit and relaunch will show this message as unread, but will behave normally/go to read when selected.

Gayatri's doing this, isn't he? Probably a dup of some bug assigned to Gayatri.

yeah, she is, but I'm not seeing this. I fixed clearing new messages from the front end a while ago. Are you still seeing this happen?

My mistake, the basic clearing of the new flag does work. I have not tried the pop filtering scenario Laurel described 2000-01-20 15:44, though. Perhaps Gayatri or Laurel could try that? Also, we're not clearing the new flag on the folder after the last new message in the folder gets read. E.g., if you have new messages in your inbox, you'll have a little green dot on the inbox in the folder pane. When you read the last new message in the inbox, the green dot on the inbox in the folder pane should go away. Perhaps that's covered in another bug?

Yes, that sceneario is covered in another bug. It's so confusing now, but by the end of this week when gayatrib checks in these problems will go away. Currently, the new folder icon is actually signifying biff and we never had any code that cleared biff. Gayatri's code does this. In addition, the new folder icon now corresponds to whether or not there are messages with the new status flag in a folder. She also turns this icon off when the last new message is read. So, perhaps this bug isn't fixed. I had fixed the part where Get New Messages clears the new list and where switching folders clears the new list but we'll have to wait for her changes until reading the last new message clears the new icon.

Well, I take that back, all is not OK. But I'm going to log a new bug about the issue. The newness appears to clear in the POP filter case upon reading the message in destination folder. Later I came back to that folder after being in another folder or account and the Newness is there/back. I only see this with POP. Will log a separate bug.
