The Latest Builds direct link button links to the Mozilla Nightly Builds. 
The correct linkage should be
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firebird/nightly/latest-trunk/ or something similar. 
Or if you want to keep the link to
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/latest/ make sure that Firebird is on
there as well.

The "Mozilla Firebird Testing Builds" link in the default bookmarks points to:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firebird/nightly/latest-trunk

so I don't see the problem.

Resolving WFM.

I think that Latest Builds link in the Bookmark Toolbar is a leftover from old
Firebird versions.  It doesn't appear in current releases if you start a new
profile.  My memory's a little shaky on that, but current releases don't create
such a link/bookmark, so there is no bug here AFAIK.

Okay.

Although I had started a super new profile, as I had only just started to use
Firebird yesterday with the version of 21-07-2003. (The latest nightly build
linked to from the mozilla.org site)

But I'll download the new version and start over.
