It's always annoying, and I think it would be a lot better if the last opened folder was remembered and opened in startup. If not the last used folder, then maybe a default folder (e.g. Inbox on one of the accounts). I am using: Mozilla Thunderbird 0.2 (20030901) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.

Tools / Account Settings / Server Settings / check for new mail on start up is what you want to set.

Hmm, didn't notice that, but still...if you have multiple accounts, one might one to select one of the folders to open at start up. Also, if you don't want to check a server at startup, you shouldn't get annoyed by that screen. I find it totally annoying, and it gets in the way. Reopen? Won't fix?
