Flash is working, but Shockwave is not. I get the puzzle piece and "Click here
to get the plugin" in the Shockwave area.

So, I click the puzzle and the "get the plugin" on the popup, and it takes me to
where I can download the plugin. I download it, quit Mozilla (and the "quick
start" Mozilla icon in the system tray), and run the installer. It seems to
detect properly that I am using Mozilla 1.5, and seems to install normally; even
congratulating me on a successful installation.

When I go back to the test page, I get a popup message from Macromedia Shockwave
saying I need to restart to complete the installation of Shockwave Player. So, I
click the Restart Now button and it restarts. When I'm back up, and go to the
test page, I have the puzzle piece again as if I never installed it!

The only thing I can think of that might have changed my system is I had some
Macromedia tools like Dreamweaver and Flash MX installed but I uninstalled them
(and even uninstalled Mozilla), reinstalled Mozilla and still have the same
problem with Shockwave.

I even tried making and using another Mozilla profile, but there was no change.

I discovered at least one other person has this problem as well.

We tried a great many uninstallations and re-installions, with no luck.  This
led us to believe there is an obscure bug in Mozilla that manifests on only a
few systems.

I note a similar bug

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
(this is not reproducable on most systems)

1. Go to the Shockwave test page at http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/welcome/
2. Click to install Shockwave plugin; download and install
3. Return to test page; it prompts to reboot
4. Reboot, return to test page
5. Test page is identical to step one; Shockwave is not working and it says
"click here to get plugin" as if it were not installed.

Actual Results:  
Shockwave never runs; Mozilla never detects it is installed.

Expected Results:  
Shockwave should run.

- reproduces with or without Pinball theme that I run

- reproduces with or without Mozilla Googlebar

- reproduces whether using 'Quickstart' or not

- made a new Profile, no change

- uninstalled all, including Java, and reinstalled, no change

- searched for and removed all instances of 'Macromedia' and 'Shockwave' on
machine, uninstalled all, reinstalled, with no change

- installed Firebird, with exact same results (Flash works, Shockwave does not).
 The Shockwave installer seemed to install fine (just like with Mozilla) after I
entered the proper registry values, but did not run when using test page.

- Shockwave works fine with IE on same system



my plugins directory has the following files

Another person has arrived in the mozillazine thread having the same problem.  I
noticed all three occurences have Win XP, and at least two (me and the latest
one)  are up to date on Win XP patches/updates.  It's possible a recent Win Xp
update might be to blame, I suppose.
Adding to CC.  I'm experiencing the same issue -- also using Windows XP.
This issue also occurs on Mozilla Firebird, Phoenix 0.3, and K-Meleon 0.8 as well.
CCing myself.  I have had this same problem on every version of Mozilla I've
used; that's anything from 1.4 to latest nightly builds, and even Firebird.
CCing Macromedia/Shockwave people as I think this might be a problem with their
plugin and not Mozilla.
Removing reference to 1.5 in the summary, since this seems to happen on other
versions as well.
Summary: Flash works but Shockwave does not on some Mozilla 1.5 installations → Flash works but Shockwave does not on some Mozilla installations
I've actually stumbled upon a workaround.

I installed Opera, ran the Shockwave Installer again, and Shockwave was then
working in both Opera and Mozilla.

I uninstalled Opera, and it still seems to work in Mozilla.
Doesn'tWorkForMe, so it's not a true workaround.
WFM, using:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7a) Gecko/20040103

and plugins:

Shockwave Flash 7.0 r14
Macromedia Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 8.5

Steps to WFM:

1. Start with a fresh Win XP install, that has never had mozilla, firebird or
any plugins installed.
2. Download latest nightly mozilla build.
3. Test URL mentioned in bug report - verified that plugins were not installed.
4. Quit brower, installed both plugins.
5. Started browser, re-visited URL.  Both plugins detected ok.

Perhaps a problem with the specific plugin versions??
Thanks to a helpful poster on MozillaZine forums, I think I've found a (kind of)
solution to this bug, although it's not althgether satisfactory.

Running mozilla.exe in Win2000 or WinNT compatibility mode seems to make the
Shockwave plugin work.  Yay!  But really, it ought to work without this mode
selected.  The same phenomenon occurs with Opera, which I believe uses the same
plugin as Mozilla.  The plugin doesn't load in Opera, unless opera.exe is run in
NT or 2000 compatibility mode, at which point it loads fine.

I guess the problem is that something about the XP environment breaks the
designed-for-Netscape version of the Shockwave plugin, on some XP machines. For
some reason. I'd submit this info to Macromedia, but I think they reroute
support mail to /dev/null. :-(

So I've discovered a workaround, but not quite a bugfix.  It's not a Mozilla
bug, it's a Shockwave plugin bug.  Bad Macromedia.
From what I've read, the compatability mode changes references to things in the
registry.  (Whether it changes other things, I don't know.)

However, if all it does is change how the registry is accessed, then perhaps
this indicates that the issue is related to the registry.
re compat mode: WFM too. Getting  flash to work then turning compat off broke it
again. This is for x-director types.

If I had any zeal I'd open up compat manager and find just what setting does the
trick.

I encountered the issue with Windows XP professional.

The following process worked fine to solve it :
1. download the program "uninstall_flash_player.exe" from the support center of
MacroMedia
2. exit Mozilla completely (exit also quick start)
3. run the un-install program, it uninstalls properly the previous installation
4. re-start your computer
5. re-install the plug-in

Normally, that should be ok now.

This suggestion was raised in the Mozillazine forums, and didn't work for
everyone (not me, for example)... so it's not a complete solution.  Macromedia
need to sort out their plugin to work properly in Windows XP, basically.

It was raised not only in the Mozillazine forums, but the initial description I
made for this bug account: 

"We tried a great many uninstallations and re-installions, with no luck."

So obviously I agree it's an incomplete solution.
I was not having this problem with Firebird0.8 nor with K-Meleon0.8.  Then cam
Firefox and its setup program (I think I used it) and - voilà - this problem
became my problem, too.  Funny thing thereby:  Shockwave and Flash still
continued working well with K-Meleon the whole while, yet KM uses the same Gecko
engine as Mozilla1.5?? and its developers say that any problems not specifically
had with unique KM functions would be due to Mozilla's bugs.  Huh??  How then
did Shockwave come to cease to function with Firefox, but not with KM?  

Problem solved?:

(1) BTW: apparently mozz.dll was not installed into the Firefox directory; I
copied it into there from the Firebird0.8 directory. 

(2) the necessary registry entries were not present, only those for Mozilla1.5b
under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Mozilla\Mozilla 1.5b.  So I entered manually an analogous
entry for Firefox including 
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Mozilla\Firefox\bin\PathToExe
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions\Components and
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions\Plugins

I then updated from KM 0.8 to KM 0.8.2, thereby cleanly/completely de-installing
  KM 0.8 and then installing KM 0.8.2.   That, of course, made it necessary for
my KM to receive a fresh install of Flash and of Shockwave.  That I did, and
thanks too the new Reg entries pertaining to Firefox, it too got blessed.  

:-)  Now Firefox is successfully using Flash and Shockwave   :-)
...oops, sorry:  I forgot to mention that I am using WIN XP Pro and 
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7a) Gecko/20040213
Firebird/0.8.0+

As I have reported, Firefox 0.8 works well with Flash and with Shockwave since
(mozz.dll got copied into the Ff 0.8 directory and) the Firefox Registry entries
got manually entered into the Registry and the Flash and Shockwave installations
were consequently repeated (whereby Firefox got discovered by the installation
programs).   
I followed your setup proceedures, and shockwave is not working.  I even deleted
the mozz.dll afterwarda, and it still works.

Aha. May I ask: as you followed those procedures, 
(1) did Firefox get recognised by the Macromedia Flash installation program
(listed w the other browsers)?  
(2) is there now a file called "ShockwavePlugin.class"  om %Firefox
directora%\Plugins?  
(3) Does K-Meleon 0.8 successfully use Flash and Shockwave?

I meant to say, "and shockwave is now working"

So, the fix does seem to solve the issue.  I'd be curious though as to whether
it would work without copying the mozz.dll file.  Would someone care to try with
just registry changes?

BTW, I'm using the zip version.
Well, alright then :-)  

(1) apparently WIN XP does not prevent Flash nor Shockwave usage nor break it.  
(2) The problem seems to be that the install version of Firefox deletes the
formerly present Registry entries listed at HKLM\SOFTWARE\Mozilla
and then merely creates Registry entries pointing to Mozilla1.5 so that no
entries then point to itself.  As a consequence, the installaiton of Flash or
Shockwave does not "see" the Firefox browser in the Registry and thus does not
service it.  
After creating the needed Registry entries pointing to Firefox then the
installation of Flash or Shockwave detects Firefox and installs without problem
to it.  It then functions perfectly well.  

(3) mozz.dll has as far as I know actually nothing to do with this issue, except
in that it, too, apparently does not get installed into the firefox directory
via the install nor via the zip version of Firefox (might it have been left out
of the Firefox software package?)  I 

I was hoping that bringing that to the attention of developers might be of help
to them.  BTW I currently am using the Java version 1.5.0 - but I don't think
that has made the differance, since Flash and Shockwave worked well with
Firebird0.8 and the older versions of Java.

I don't think it's as simple as that, Robert.  Shockwave's a rather messy
plugin.  I and several others tried cleaning up HKLM\SOFTWARE\Mozilla and then
installing Shockwave, but it still wouldn't work - for me it wouldn't work in
Mozilla, Firefox or Opera - until the browser executable was set to Windows 2000
compatibility mode.  Then it magically started working; so it obviously isn't an
installation problem, it doesn't like to run under Windows XP sometimes.
I should mention that a little while ago I started using a new profile.  Prior
to that time I had always used the same profile.  I'm not sure if that affects
things or not.
Has anyone checked this with Shockwave Player 10?
Still not working except in win2k compat mode. Moz 1.7b & shockwave director 10.0.
i managed to fix this on my xp box after none of the previous steps worked.

(1) quit firefox
(2) delete np32dsw.dll from the plugins directory
(3) run Shockwave_Installer_Full.exe
(4) open Shockwave_Installer_Full.exe in your favourite compression tool (i use
winrar)
(5) manually extract np32dsw.dll from the exe to your plugins directory

the shockwave installer requires the following registry entries to be set in
order to find firefox :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla\Mozilla Firebird\Extensions
  Components  --> full path to firefox\components
  Plugins     --> full path to firefox\plugins
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla\Mozilla Firebird\bin
  PathToExe   --> full path to firefox.exe

note the key names are *Mozilla Firebird* not Firefox.

would it be possible for firefox to automatically populate these registry
entries on startup if they are missing or invalid?

I sadly have to report that exactly the same problem happens on my system with
Shockwave player 10 installed - only appears to be installed when running in

Oh yes, do I have Shockwave problems!!! I have lived with this problem for 
about three month or so. I believe it occurred after a multiple Windows 
upgrade. I didn't bother with it because I was going to have a complete System 
re-install. Meaning formatting the hard drive to get a clean install. No such 
luck, the problem STAYED.

once I solve the Jigsaw Puzzle and click "Play Again" and it crashes. No

I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times but to no avail.

Shockwave seamed totally oblivious to the problem that I and so many users are 
having! Their only suggestions is: Do not have multiple dirapi.dll or 
iml32.dll anywhere in the system. Which I DO NOT. They are all in: 
C:\Windows\system32\macromed\Shockwave 10\

I am totally stumped and I was hoping some of you wizards in here would be 
able to HELP?


Before installing FF 0.9.3, I cleaned out all old FF installs, and cleaned all
references to Firefo* in the Registry, then installed using a new profile.  As
expected, neither Flash nor SW worked.

First, I tried the top half of Comment #26.  This made Flash work but not SW.
Second, I tried the 2nd half of Comment #26.  Restarted FF; no change.

Third, looking at Comment #10, I noticed that this install does not set
Compatibility Mode.  (Didn't it used to?)  As soon as I enabled Win 2000
Compatibility Mode and restarted FF, both SW and Flash worked fine.

Fourth, I disabled Win 2000 Compatibility Mode.  Restarted FF; SW failed again,
though Flash is OK.

My system: WinXP Pro SP1, Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US;
rv:1.7) Gecko/20040803 Firefox/0.9.3.
To everyone following this: With win xp sp2 I have found that the Windows
Compatibility Manager/Mode (for Moz anyway) is broken. Moz will not run if set
to win2k compat (or any for that matter). Removing the compat mode brings Moz
back to life. However, the flash then doesn't work.
OK, I have been meaning to do this for sometime, now I have been forced to.

This is the setting that causes Flash to work in mozilla for those having to run
win2k compat mode: "LoadLibraryCWD".

In compatibility manager, add a fix, select win2k mode, then deselect all but
the above. Moz will now run with flash.

For the record, the setting causing Moz to die when in win2k compat mode with xp
sp2 is "VirtualRegistry".

Here's what I went through to apply what you suggested.  It worked!  Thanks, but
here it is in layman's terms:

You need the act30pkg.exe download from Microsoft.  The 2.0 version is on the XP
cdrom, but I downloaded the newer version just in case.  It's the application
compatibility tool.

Install it.  It will appear on the Start Menu.  Inside, click the Fix icon to
make a new fix.  Fill in the info (file is mozilla.exe located in c:\program
files\mozilla.org\mozilla\mozilla.exe, so just browse over to it).  Choose the
radio button for Windows 2000.  On the next screen choose to deselect all and
tell the warning box "OK" to continue.  Now scroll down in the list to
"LoadLibraryCWD," and check to select it.  That's the process that needs to
happen to get Shockwave to work, but the other 2000 mode changes aren't
necessary so that's why you don't let Windows check them.  The one that caused
Mozilla not to work in 2000 compatibility mode with XPSP2 was "VirtualRegistry,"
 but that won't be a problem now since we're deselecting all except the one we
need for Shockwave.

Next, after you've finished going through the boxes and it closes, click the "X"
to close the program and it will prompt you to name and save the new fix.  I
named the fix, "Mozilla Shockwave Fix,"  and then saved it with that name to the
Mozilla folder.

But, we're not done yet because the fix must be registered so it will be applied
everytime we open Mozilla.  Go to Start, Run and browse to the saved fix file in
the Mozilla folder.  Choose that file, but don't open it yet!  In the run box,
click the mouse at the beginning of the file name and type in, "sdbinst," before
it. (Of course, don't type my commas and quotation marks!)  Now click open.  If
you did it right, an info box will appear saying the file was registered.  At
this point I rebooted the computer just in case.

Now, if you go ahead and run Mozilla you can go to the Shockwave test page and
no longer be nagged to install the plugin that you know is installed correctly!
 Shockwave will work perfectly.

Even though I had McAfee VirusScan disabled when I installed the App compat
program, McAfee's Script Stopper kept popping up warning of possible bad script
activity.  Just click, "allow whole script this time,"  every time you get the
message box.  Otherwise the program won't install right and you'll have problems.

Although your fixes are useful, please could you limit them to places like
Mozillazine?  This thread is about a bug in Mozilla/Shockwave and we should be
badgering the writers of whatever code causes it not to work to fix it so it
runs *natively* in Windows XP SP2.  These fixes only encourage them not to bother.

2.) Create a folder in C:\TEMP named PROGRAM

3.) Rename any file you want to NETSCAPE.EXE and copy it to C:\TEMP\PROGRAM

4.) By starting Shockwave_Installer_Full.exe , you are now able to select
"Netscape 4.78 (en)"

5.) After installing Shockwave there is a new subfolder C:\TEMP\PROGRAM\Plugins
- copy its content (.DLL, .CLASS) to your Mozilla/plugins location



That's it! ...works fine for me

The above steps didn't work for me on Mozilla 1.7.3 on winxp sp2 because the
files were already there in the plugins folder. I'm getting the puzzle thing
with Shockwave installed at

Encountered this same problem (flash working but not shockwave) on another one
of my computers running Windows 98.  I used the plug-in finder to install it. 
Although there's some problems with the system, it does indicate how common this
bug might be.

Sorry about the above post.  The problem was probably caused by something I did
to the system (reinstalled Windows), as a result, the registry entries were no
longer there.
I recently encountered this bug again when I had to install Firefox on a new
Windows installation.  The site with the Shockwve just didn't display anything
in place of the Shockwave embed.  So, I closed the browser, changed its
properties to run in Win2000 compatibility mode as usual (this is in Windows
XP), returned to the site, no change.  The way I *made* it work was to then
close FF, and run the manual Shockwave installer on the system.  When I ran FF
again and went to the site, Shockwave finally worked and popped up with the
registration dialog.

Keep this as a bug, as what I did should obviously not be necessary.

Your explanation was very helpful and I was doing great up to the part where you
say "if you did it right, an info box will appear....".  I must have done
something wrong around that point.  

Firstly, when you named the fix "Mozilla Shockwave Fix" to the Mozilla folder,
did you actually have spaces in the file name?  And was there an extension? 
Mine was automatically set to .sdb  so that's how I saved it.  When I went to
run the file, after typing in the 'sdbinst' text (without commas and quotations
of course), I got a message from Windows saying that it didn't recognize the
file.  I tried several things like removing the spaces, removing the extension.
 Nothing seemed to work.  I am so close!

I've had Mozilla for about a year and it has never run any Flash pages.  I've
had to go to the dreaded IE Explorer to see those pages.  Today, I downloaded
Firefox 1.0.4 because I had heard great things about it and I was hoping that it
would be able to play Flash pages.  No luck.  I've been spent the last 5 hours 
pouring through these bug fixes and come this close but still no Flash.

I'm really hoping with your answer to my question that that will be the last
thing that helps turn this around because this is getting very frustrating!

By the way I run Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and of course I downloaded the
act30pkg.exe toolkit too which was a little tricky to find since after typing
the file name in the search box in the MSN site search window, it came up with 
 no matching files.  I'm rambling....sorry.

I have no Fix icon.  It asks if I want local or network.  Then it asks if I want
standard reports or custom.

Where is the fix icon?

I have the same problem, opening up Mozilla Firebird Fix and adding sdbinst to
the beginning of the file name I just get a file not found message.

I have tried the registry edit with the manual install of shockwave as well as using the unistaller/install methods described on the Macromedia website. Mozilla FireFox even thinks that shockwave is installed - but no shockwave content can be displayed. I am running win XP Home with SP2 and latest fixes. FF is version 1.07.10. As others have said - it works fine in IE which is quite disappointing. I had found that the registry editor had a 8.5 version listed instead of the verison 10 that I had installed the first time and I thought that this might have been the issue. However, even after deleting, uninstalling and re-installing and verifying that it was correct - still no go. The strange thing that I found was that regardless of following the Macromedia instructions I always had the "Reboot required" pop-up that is not supposed to occur.

So maybe there are two bugs - one in Macromedia Shockwave and one in FireFox?

They're now up to the Application Compatibility Toolkit 4.0.  Since these postings I've realized I can create the fix as I described, save it, and install it all within the program using the icons and the dropdown menus.  So I no longer need to type anything into the run box, etc.

I still need to use this in order to get Shockwave to work in Firefox using the latest release versions of Firefox, Flash, and Shockwave.  But it works for me everytime.  

Yes, I still name the fix as I described including the spaces in the file name, and I save it to the Firefox folder and then install it with the Toolkit File dropdown where it says install.  I just call it Firefox Shockwave Fix now.

I also fill in the boxes on the first page of the Fix dialog and browse to the Firefox folder and select Firefox.exe as the file to apply the fix to.

This has worked for me, and I can't understand why it shouldn't for anyone doing it.  Just try it again.

I still don't understand why this LoadLibrary thing can't be built in to the Firefox program by default.  I think most folks just don't use Firefox for Shockwave as this fix is far from something obvious for most folks to do.  They need to find the tool on Microsoft's website, install it, and do these not so obvious steps to install the fix.

Wouldn't this thing be a priority?  How come Shockwave has never worked on any of my computer's or friend's computer's unless I do this fix?  

How come no one's complaining like crazy to the Mozilla and Macromedia people about this?

In my experience, Shockwave will just never work on Firefox without applying this compatibility fix.
Dennis, I've done everything you said but i cant find LoadLibraryCWD in the list! I'm using ACT 4.0 but that "option" aint listed.
Also, after i click on Windows 2000 and click next, on that list (where LoadLibraryCWD should be) do i unselect all or leave those already selected? Cus VirtualLibrary is already selected with 2 other files.
I only had to extract the np32dsw.dll from the installer into the plugin directory. Then it worked.
Before this file simply didn't exist on the system.

No registry editing.
Using compatibility modes also didn't help.

I 2 had the same problem as MUGROS.
1)The file did not exist before.
2)Compatibility modes did not help.
3)No registry edits.
4)I just extracted the np32dsw.dll file to the plugin folder and it worked!!

Now my firefox has both Shockwave and Flash.

This problem suddenly showed up on my dual Xeon XP system after the latest round of Microsoft patches (don't know if that's really the cause, but the timing is good).  Flash work fine, but Shockwave doesn't do anything.  And...  It's broken in Opera too!  Shockwave only works in IE6 (activeX).   However, after setting W2K compatibility it works fine!  Exact same behavior on Seamonkey 1.1.2, Seamonkey 2.0a(pre), Firefox 2.0.0.4, Mozilla 1.7.13, and Opera 9.21 (!!!).  This really points to an Adobe bug!  (or Adobe and MS)
I've gone through flushing every trace of Shockwave stuff then re-installing with the "latest" (np32dsw.dll is version 10.2.0.22) although 10.2r20 shows up on the "welcome test".
This is a really bizarre problem.  Shockwave player has actually been working on this Windows XP PC until today, when it just mysteriously stopped working.  I tried running Firefox in Windows 2000 compatibility mode, and lo and behold, it started working.  So, it looks like this is a problem that can just start happening for no obvious reason (I can't think of one; I just tried to access a Director movie, .dcr, and Shockwave Player didn't launch).

The Shockwave Plugin is really nasty, its NOT user friendly. I will tell you my situation. All problems happened after automatic shockwave update:

So, i have Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.11, Windows XP SP2 and already Shockwave installed. After long time, i opened a shockwave application, suddenly a window popped out: "Shockwave Player needs to be updated"
I clicked on "Ok", and after Shockwave is downloading the new version and sets some registry keys (logged with Kaspersky) it prompted me to restart.

After restart the Updater told me to open an install webpage. On Firefox nothing happens. So i closed Firefox and tried the install page on Internet Explorer: A Accept Windows came, and it installed on Internet Explorer. After finish and creating some more critical registry keys, Shockwave told me that Shockwave is broken and i have to repair it. After clicking yes, i came to a 404-page not found site!!! What a ****!

Ok, so after 2 times restarting, hundreds of "ok's" and "accept" and browser switches i uninstalled shockwave, and downloaded "shockwave_full.exe" and "shockwave_slim.exe".
After uninstalling the broken shockwave from updater, i installed the slim version: On Internet Explorer it works now, and no "broken error" as from the automatic updater before.

I opened Firefox and visited the Shockwave test page: Short time it gets black, and then a screen came: "Player has been updated, please restart"
"Oh no, not again!" - i thougt.

After restart on firefox the testpage of shockwave was just white, not more.

Plugin and everything is in right directory (Mozilla Firefox\plugins).

Then i tried, after DAYS of frustration why this dont work, the Windows 2000 Compatibility Mode - and suddenly it works. But ONLY on Win2K Compatibility Mode.


Facit: ****. Why does such a good factory like Adobe make such a ****? PostUpdate.exe is very buggy.

Just posting to confirm that this bug still seems to exist in Firefox 3.  Until I run FF3 in Win2k compatibility mode, embedded Shockwave objects fail to load.  Maybe it's something to do with the plugin itself and Firefox can't do anything about it, I don't know.
Is this bug about installation from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/ ?
It wouldn't install for me from there - I had to do manual install by downloading Shockwave_Installer_Slim.exe - then 11.0r429 successfully installed 

What us macromedia' take on this? (several are cc: on the bug)
