I do not want to use a preview pane in the email reader so I resize the preview
pane to zero height. However, this preference is not saved between program
executions. In fact, it does not even work properly for subsequent messages. As
soon as I select another message, it brings back the preview pane with a height
of one text line instead of zero. Please fix it so that I can have no preview
pane and can save this preference for all future program executions.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to email inbox.
2. Resize preview pane to zero height.
3. Quit program and restart it.

Actual Results:
The preview pane was back to its default height.

Expected Results:
It should have retained my preference for no preview pane (zero height).
View -> Show/Hide -> Message Pane. Does this function correctly? When I resize
the message pane to zero height, it de-checks this menuitem. Rechecking it
shows your described one text line. tested in 1.4, winxp.

Which layout of the 3-pane window are you using? Normal (folder-tree pane goes
from top to bottom) or 'alt' (message window goes from left to right)?

If 'alt' you are probably encountering bug 77447. In normal layout, the message
pane stays hidden for me.

specifically note whether your conditions match those in bug 77447.
