One or to beeps in total should be more then enough to bring to your attention that someone PMed you, even if they sent a whole block of text. Even just 30 lines of eg code sent in a PM this way is enough to drive you mad :P Thus, if the same person sends many messages to you privately within eg 60sec, it should be enough to only color the tab red after the first 1-2 beeps/lines. This has been fixed since ChatZilla 0.9.63 --> FIXED. The preference Overlap Delay (Global Settings > Global > Sounds) defaults to 2 seconds, preventing the same event playing a sound again within that time. You can change it to a longer time if you like.
