Compared to 4.7x of Netscape, Mozilla is too slow navigating an FTP site via the
browser.
Steps to repro:
1)Time yourself when you manually navigate to the directory
"ftp://sweetlou/products/client/seamonkey/windows/32bit/x86/2000-01-06-09-M13"
....starting at ftp://sweetlou.

Actual Results:

MAC G3, 128mb ram, Mac OS 8.6
NS 4.7 - 15 sec
Mozilla 5.0 - 36 sec
****2.4X slower on Mozilla

WIN NTspk 5, Vectra P3-450 128mb ram
NS 4.7.1 - 14 sec
Mozilla 5.0 - 27 sec
****1.9x slower on Mozilla

LINUX RH 6.0, Compaq Deskpro P-200mhz/128mb ram
NS 4.7 - 18 sec
Mozilla 5.0 - 48 sec
****2.7x slower on Mozilla
I forgot to add, I tested this using the 2000-01-05-15 M13 builds for all
platforms.

this is ultra fast for me now. Any chance you can rerun your tests?

on the m13 build 1/25 20 over a dial up connection its unusable slow.
I frequently get hung up and get no reponse clicking on a directory
trying to navigate down through the tree. Have the url shown in
the location window point to a xul file is also a bummer ( e.g.
chrome://directory/content/directory.xul) and makes cutting
and pasting ftp url and sending them off to folks in a mail
message impossible. file send also also seem to loose
any navigation state as you have moved down through the tree
and only shows ftp://sweetlou after you have moved down to
ftp://sweetlou/products/client. I guess those navigation
useability problems ought to be broken off into a separate
bug from the performance problems.

I tested this over a 26k connection, it was useless, but so was FTP in 4.x.
We're about 10-30% slower in mozilla (is my guess just based on observation).
Can someone dig up some more data. If we're not much worse than 4.x, I'm
inclined to leave this alone.

I just checked in some fixes today that should speed up FTP displays by 2x...
basically, every top-level FTP URL was being fetched twice before being
displayed. That is no longer the case. Marking this fixed... more timing data
will be useful to decide whether Mozilla is still slower than 4.x or not.

this is a test for tever
using a timer the speed at which I can navigate sweetlou is approximately the
same for both 4.7x and 6. This is not a real accurate test but we are seeing
nowhere near the delays originally reported.
