Thounderbird should provide the ability to select different columns and layouts
for news- and mail-server. For example the vertical layout is useless to me for
reading mails but not for reading news and the "junk status" column makes no
sense in the news articles list. But at the moment I can only choose one layout
(including columns) for reading news and mails.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Select an email account
2. (De)Select some columns and choose a layout
3. Switch to a news account
4. (De)Select some columns and choose a layout
3. Switch to the mail account
Actual Results:
Thunderbird uses the defined columns and layout for the mail- and news account

Expected Results:
Thunderbird should "remind" the defined columns at the mail account and use them
when I select the mail account (same for news accounts).

If it's possible there should be a capability to make those defined "layouts"
(layout and selected columns) the global setting for any used mail- or news servers.
looks like this is the thunderbird version of Mozilla Mail bug 76702. I don't
see another report of this on thunderbird, nor am I certain we need one for both
apps but I'll confirm this for now and the mail devs can decided whether or not
we need two.

Ever confirmed: true
Now we have the 0.8 release with RSS feeds, this is becoming even more
important. Most columns for mail are pretty useless for RSS feeds.

Compare to bug 259609, which I think would be a more useful solution.
I think you're right. Bug 259609 seems to be a better solution for this problem.

I fully agree with comment 0 and comment 2. That's really something we should have.

as far as i understand this bug, choosing different columns works with

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1.2pre) Gecko/20090727 Shredder/3.0b4pre ID:20090727034746

but i have no news account configured to see what happens if i select a different layout via "View" | "Layout".

i can however confirm that if i switch the Layout from e.g. "Classic View" to "Wide View", it will remain the same layout regardless which imap email account i use.

so i guess, the issue that remains is "Choosing a different layout for different Accounts".

cheers,
btw, is bug 259609 "Different column layouts for different folders" a dupe of this?

It's resolved so no need to dup it.
