The checkbox is there in current builds, but it is not properly shown as related to (indented under) the check for messages/biff pref.

I'm not yet working on the m15 trunk builds -- did you also tie it to the biff pref, i.e. it won't be accessible to enable unless the biff pref is selected/enabled? This is the way 4.x uses it on windows, mac (linux didn't, but I don't think that was correct). I also believe it's only to appear for POP. Just checking...
The checkbox is in the account settings dialog and is indeed indented, but is incorrect in both IMAP and POP server panels. I'll list the problems below and you can let me know if you want to have separate issue(s) logged: 1. IMAP server panel: if we're using 4.x as a model, the "automatically download new messages" shouldn't be there. We do this as a matter of course once biff is enabled. 2. POP server panel: The "automatically download new messages" option is indented under an unrelated pref ("delete messages on server when deleted locally") 3. POP server panel: Once the pref is moved to the right location under biff, it should only be accessible when biff is enabled. See 4.x windows.
Summary: [UI] missing checkbox for ""Automatically download any new messages" → UI changes needed for "Automatically download any new messages"

I moved it to the right position, I think it's "good enough" for beta2

In jun7 m17 commercial builds this pref is now missing from the POP server panel in Account Settings. The spec still shows it should be there. Please put it back or 'xplain.

ah! I figured out what was going on - this exposed a bug in the panel actually - we were being to aggressive about hiding controls that had hidefor= ...this means we also lost - empty trash on exit - remember password (though that's coming out anyway) this means it's actually fixed now, so I'm marking fixed.

Well, although the pref is back in the ui and indented accordingly under the biff pref, it still has some ui kind of problems. But since this is already marked verified for the recent "missing" problem, rather than confuse the readers with reopening and adding to this bug, I'll log the ui problems remaining in separate bugs.
