User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040113
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040113

My Mozilla Mail 1.6 INBOX folder grew to over 2Gigabytes in size.
However, there are only 26MB of email in the Inbox of my imap web server.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. I create a new folder, myfolder, for offline use in an IMAP account.
2. I move a single 500 kiloByte emailA from the Inbox to myfolder.
3. I move emailA from myfolder back to Inbox.
4. I move a different single 500 kiloByte emailB from the Inbox to myfolder.
5. I move emailB from myfolder back to Inbox.
6. myfolder is now completely empty when viewed through both Mozilla and the
webmail interface to my imap account
7. The 'compact folder' option is not available at this point for 'myfolder', so
I cannot run it.

Actual Results:
The myfolder imap file in my mozilla profile directory is now approximately 1MB.

Expected Results:
It should be size 0 to reflect the state of the imap server as well as to match
the view provided by Mozilla Mail.

Same behavior in Mozilla 1.5, too.
you need to compact the offline store to get the space back and to remove the
deleted messages, or set up auto compact of folders/offline stores when it will
save XX KB...compact is available in 1.7
Thanks, I'll install 1.7 and test it.

I presume then that the compact folder function is broken in 1.6?
I set the compact feature to run if 1KB or more could be saved.
Then I right-clicked the 'myfolder', and ran 'Compact this Folder'
It did not change the size of the myfolder file in my profile.

right, 1.6 didn't compact the offline store in that situation...
Just tried it out in 1.7 and it worked great.
Thanks.
