"mark as read by date" dialog too small.  the window title gets cropped.  let me
screen shot.

I don't suppose you can provide a 4.x screenshot for comparison?
(preferably not in .jpeg format because of the lossy compression)
I lost my local 4.x when my disk crashed :-(

I've attached what it looked like on 4.x win32.

I'm not sure what it looked like on mac or linux.

Well, we could go for the "simple" fix by shortening the title to something like
"Mark Read by Date" to fit the dialog.

Or we could try juggling the dialog around a bit, like this:

Mark messages as read from: [__________]
                        To: [__________]
               (    OK    ) (  Cancel  )
