When spell checking an email message as a reply, I commonly have to
spell check the recipients names in the quoting part of the message:

FirstName LastName wrote:

Since the names are already supposedly correct and gathered from the
recipient list, they could be ignored or skipped.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Find an email from somebody whose name is probably not in a dictionary.
2. Click Reply.
3. Click Spell. The person's name will be flagged for correction.
I guess this is a duplicate of bug 216235.
See also bug 214518.
Well, regarding bug 216235, my uninformed guess is that adding the words in the
sender or receipent email address to the list of properly spelled words would be
much simplier than modifying the DOM of the new email message. After all, the
supplied patch hasn't been applied yet.

This solution would also fix the problem where if you copy the person's name
into a non-quoted text part, you still wouldn't have to spell check it.

I think this is a duplicate of bug 216235

bug #326222 was marked as a duplicate. in that bug i suggested not to spellcheck any names found in the thunderbird address book. that fixes that problem and more. you can see details in that bug report. i think that's the best and more generic solution for this problem.

Problem is the address book is useless for those working on NNTP news servers. Is is very true in the mozilla.support. groups Any solution must work for both mail and news.
How about not obsessing about proper names being underlined? :)
Sorry, but in the end, this is the only real solution.
Brett, We don't all use the spellcheck-while-composing feature.
Some of us use the spell checker in the mode where it runs over the text
when you press the send button. The appearance of any misspelled word
causes the send process to stop. It would be nice if one could send
messages that have the correspondents' names in them without fighting
the spell checker.
