Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040626 Firefox/0.8
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040626 Firefox/0.8 (Actually v0.9.1)

Originally, IE was my default browser. I recently changed it to 0.9 (from 0.8
earlier) and afterwards installed 0.9.1. I created blank files of the following
types: *.htm, *.html, *.shtml, *.shtm, *.asp, *.cfm, *.php, *.sgm, *.sgml,
*.stm, *.stml, *.wrl, *.dwt. Only *.html and *.shtml are currently associated
with Firefox (granted not all of these SHOULD be but they all contain HTML code
and COULD be loaded in the browser) At least *.htm and *.shtm should be associated.

Reproducible: Didn't try
Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.
See also bug 144802. It has a patch with review, maybe some progress can be made
there.
With Firefox 0.9.3 (and 0.9.2) I found that setting Firefox to be default
browser did not associate it as the default programme for .html or .htm. In
fact not for any locally stored files.

Seems to have gone from claiming control of everything people didn't want it to
(ie jpegs and other graphic files) to nothing at all!
I can acknoledge it on my system (win2k sp4) with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U;
Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041015 Firefox/0.10.1

Requesting status "confirmed"
Firefox shouldn't be associated with .shtml or .php etc. as these are only
useful for web server, and provided they're using the correct MIME type then
they don't need their file type associated.

I think this is invalid/wontfix.
But firefox should be associated to .htm as well as its already associated to .html
I just tested it and Firefox (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US;
rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041031 Firefox/1.0RC2) does register itself as the handler for
.htm and .html files.

Therefore, it seems, this bug is dealing with the fact that Firefox isn't set as
the handler for *.shtm, *.asp, *.cfm, *.php, *.sgm, *.sgml,
*.stm, *.stml, *.wrl, *.dwt. I think this should be a wontfix.

I think if Firefox is set to handle .shtml then it should handle .shtm too but
most of these other formats shouldn't be associated with a browser.

This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.

While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we
are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce
this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a
copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and
you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug
(given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more
reproduction information if you have it.

If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not
changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved.
