I've checked that this bug is still there but ONLY if you are using an identity wich isn't the main one for that account. I don't have permissions to reopen the bug, so I've had to enter a new one. I can't reproduce it. I've sent a mail from one of my IMAP accounts to another one and the message got copied to the Sent folder. After opening the sent folder and the message no dialog box came up to sent a notification.

I've tested with mozilla 1.8a5 and Linux but the platform shouldn't be a difference.
With the main identity there's NO problem, you have to send the message with a different identity to reproduce the problem. (I've just checked it with Thunderbird 1.0)

ahh, you're right. In addition the message is marked as unread if moved to the sent-folder. But that would be another bug.

seems that fix for bug #218132 has to be extended to know all own mail-addresses

Confirming on version 2.0.0.23 (20090817), x86_64 Linux. Opening a mail on the account A's Sent folder, that is sent by you with the account's extra identity B you get a return receipt question.

Confirming on Thunderbird 3.0.3 The return receipt question is raised in an other scenario, too: E-Mail is sent from an additional identity to the main identity. If I read the e-mail in the Inbox of the account I get the question.
