User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041024 Firefox/1.0 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041024 Firefox/1.0 NOTE: This also applies to Firefox, but is less critical there. Should I file a second bug?? At various points in the evolution of the products, it is important that we NOT use an existing profile. In the case of my Gigabyte mail store, I'm obviously not about to start from zero very often!! At the completion of the installation, the panel "offers" to launch into the product. It would be a considerable improvement if the launch were into the profile manager. If that were done, it would be simpler to make changes. It should also be possible that the installer contain sufficient information to advise the user when a new profile is a neccessity instead of just a good idea. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install Thunderbird Actual Results: The last panel of the installation process offers to launch the product. If one selects "yes" the product is launched with a possibly dirty or obsolete profile. Selecting "no" requires to exit and go to the start-menu or equivalent. It also requires to remember that there may be a problem or to find out the hard way. Expected Results: Launched the ProfileManager. That way the possibility of avoiding a problem is right in front of the user, and it serves as a reminder that action might be appropriate. This is closely related to ENH <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=266343>. However, this one should be done regardles what happens to #255343.

Definite WONTFIX for Firefox, I'll let Scott speak for tbird but I don't like making the profile manager more exposed than necessary.

Exposed? It's a tool in the hands of a user! It sits in her [Windows] start menu - how exposed is that? A user who just wants to start the product and run with it is probably NOT downloading a new version every week. HOW ABOUT giving the choice on that last panel of the installer? Do you think you are Microsoft that you can tell the users what they really need all the time?

Continuing the logic of Comment#3, the whole Profile creation / conversion logic could be in the installer.
