So, technically a firefox is a nickname for a red panda. I didn't know that -- I guess that most people don't. However, the (nice) logo is definitely leaning towards representing vulpes vulpes, the red/common fox. I see users referring to firefox as the 'fox', 'foxen' in plural (for some reason), and never a '[red] panda'. The mozillastore soft-toy is a red panda, however. This is a fairly minor branding/logo issue. My inclination would be to generally run with vulpes vulpes.

worksforme. see http://www.hicksdesign.co.uk/journal/377/branding_firefoxindex.php the original sketch actually looks more like red panda, and the current version looks like a fox to me (more pointy ears and tail)

I don't see how that's worksforme though. You're agreeing that the firefox identity is portraying two different species (for example, the toy vs the logo).
