Downloaded and unpacked thunderbird-1.0.tar.gz in 
/usr/local.
The OS is Mandrake Linux 10.1 Community Edition
(5 CD's) purchased from LinuxCentral.com.

Executed /usr/local/thunderbird/thunderbird.
It crashed and got a core dump.
gdb shows the following stack trace:
