I used software updates to try to update Firefox. It found a critical update, however, when I click on the download and install update, the progress bar opens up but nothing else ever happens. I also tried other things on your web page and none of the downloads work. For instance, I tried to download other themes but nothing happens for any of them. I click on download under any of the specific themes but the download never happens. Nothing on the site seems to work right.

I am seeing identical behaviour on XP/SP2 machines at my office. Further details include: <ul><li>Once you close Firefox out (it hangs) you can't restart it - you are informed that an installation is in progress and that you need to restart (program or whole computer isn't specified in the dialog) in order to proceed. <li>Several (four to six, typically) xpicleanup.exe processes are running in the task manager, all of which need to be killed manually. <li>One firefox.exe process running in the background, displaying nothing on the screen (you can't alt-tab to it, doesn't display anything) </ul><p> On our machines, the fact that it won't start and scatters xpicleanup processes in the process is persistent across reboots, and the only practical solution has been uninstalling FF-1.0 and installing FF-1.0.1.<p> <a href="https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=284904">Bug 284904</a> appears to be a duplicate of this bug.

When I try to update by clicking on the arrow in the upper right corner of the browser, I get the message, "now downloading and installing updates," but it just hangs and I have to eventually just shut it down.

Same thing happens for me in Firefox 1.0.2, Windows 98 SE. Either click on "check for updates" in Tools|Options, or click on Critical Update button in menu bar. Opens download window or starts progress bar, and nothing else happens - no response. Closing the download window lets me get back to using the browser as normal. Can download complete new package from Firefox downloads, but not "updates". Also happened in 1.0.1 on same machine. Never had 1.0 so I can't tell about that.

I have this same problem. This has happened with 3 different versions of Firefox! XP SP2

This is a duplicate of Bug #288054. At present, the firefox update is unable to work when the "Allow web sites to install software" is disabled. That option is found via Tools | Options, then looking in the "Web Features" section.

I encountered the same problems and believe that it would be helpful if, when clicking on update now, a message would be displayed if the setting is to disable updates. Keep in mind that the "fix" for some of the issues in 1.03 was to disable updates. I'm guessing that, like me, most users forgot that they had disabled the update feature.

I have the same problem on my XP machine. Running 1.0.6 I have "Allow web sites to install software" turned on (and the standard Mozilla sites on my list) I have the following message (twice) in my JS console: Error: this.appUpdater has no properties Source File: file:///C:/Program%20Files/Mozilla%20Firefox/components/nsUpdateService.js Line: 576

This one is still out there I guess. I was notified that there was a critical update. I clicked to download, and it tries to download forever. Here's the info from my about box: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.10) Gecko/20050716 Firefox/1.0.6

I fixed the problem on my machine by clicking Firefox - Tools/Options/Web Features/Allow Websites to install software/Allow Sites/ , then type: "download.mozilla.org". Click "OK" and then "OK" for the Options menu. Once I did this I then clicked on the critical updates button and the downloaded, no worries.

confirm original post: same problem with Deer Park Alpha 2 1.6a1 (XP+SP2) specifically: "Downloading Update" window shows "Paused downloading Deer Park 1.6a1"/"Connecting to the update server" but all the options are greyed as to "Resume", "Back", "Next" * I've left the update window open for 24+hours with no change. * I've closed the update window via "X", recliked "Help"> "Check for Updates"; same results. * I've restarted Deer Park. (no problems as to it restarting; but update still hangs) * I tried cheking/uncheking Tools> Options> Auto check for updates + Help> Check for updates * I have: Advanced> Update> Show Update History: Security Update Installed on: Feb 01,2006... Status: Failed (Unknown Reason) as to comment #16 here, apparantly Deer Park 1.6a1 doesn't have this path/option any longer...? thanks~

Is this still reproducable? Please update to a recent nightly build (http://www.mozilla.org/developer). If not, please close as WORKSFORME.
