I have setup Thunderbird with 2 accounts: 1 IMAP account and 1 UNIX movemail  
account.  
  
The movemail account is not checked at startup (even though the option is  
enabled), and it is not checked when using the "Get All New Messages" menu  
item or Control+Shift+T 
 
To reproduce: 
 
1. from the command line: 
    $ echo "test" | mail -s none username 
 
2. Press Control+Shift+T or select the Get All New Messages menu item... mail 
does not show up.  However, selecting "Get New Messages for movemail" works.

I'm also having this problem and also the movemail account I have isn't checked
at startup or every x minutes even though the options are set - I have 4 other
accounts, ISP-based and they work just fine.

To get the mails from the movemail account I have to select it and "Get Mail" or
select it from the drop-down box on the "Get Mail" button.

Using Gentoo Linux and Thunderbird binary version:

mail-client/mozilla-thunderbird-bin-1.0.6-r3

Same here on fbsd, Mozilla 1.7.12.
The mails are not downloaded ,not at startup, not at scheduled time.

I also have this problem, using Redhat_9.0 and Fedora_C3 whit thunderbird 1.5.0.4 Symptoms exactly as described above. Furthermore:

Thunderbird does not run automatically the Junk Mail control.
However, when I run manually the Tools-->Run Junk Mail Controls,
 everything goes fine (thunderbird marks correctly the spam e-mails
 and moves them to the Junk folder), but it is impossible to
 do that automatically, that is when i get the messages,
 without running the command manually.

I confirm the problem with Thunderbird 1.0.8-1.4.1 (20060420).

How come this bug is still status "unconfirmed" after so many people have reported the same problem?

I am having the same problem with the latest Thunderbird 2.0.0.0. Isn't it about time somebody looked at this? It's the "Check for new messages every <X> minutes" functionality I need to get working. Pressing "Get Mail" all the time is a real pain.

David, knowing it doesn't work in 2.0 (comment 11) is a test of a nightly of any value?

- The startup issue is almost trivial, just one flag to change.

I applied your patch against Thunderbird 2.0.0.12 running under Ubuntu 7.10 but it failed to work. Mail for my movemail account still isn't being checked unless I explicitly get it for the account.

What version of TB did you verify the patch with? Do you (or anyone else, for that matter) mind re-testing the patch against my TB version or any other considered stable?

The patch is *not* against 1.8 branch, but against trunk.
And as such it works when building TB 3 or SM 2 from trunk, I just checked that it still applies.

Since the release of TB 3 doesn't seem to occur very soon, I'd like to modify the patch such that it applies to TB 2(.0.0.12) as well.

Would you mind publishing a 1.8 branch-compatible patch or giving details on what needs to be done in the 1.8 branch code for your patch to work? I'm willing to dig into the code somewhat although I'm a complete novice to Mozilla/Thunderbird development.

Still doesn't work in 2.0.0.14.  Any plans on getting this fixed (now almost 3 years after the initial report of the problem...goodness, you'd think we were dealing with Oracle here!) in the 2.x version of Tbird?

And most probably never will. TB3 is already in Alpha land and thus (plus the fact that this is no security fix) the 1.8 branch is not a likely target.

This should do it for the 1.8 branch (TB2/SM1.1). It's untested (yet) but as Karsten stated, even if it works it'll probably not be accepted. Since SM 2 is nowhere near completion I regret that decision but anyway I'm thankful that it's at least fixed on the trunk now. Good work!

This is still broken in TB 3.0b4 (linux binary) and when building 3.0b4 from the source (under RHEL5.4).  I also MANUALLY applied the patch that was previously mentioned, but it didn't seem to make any difference.  (the patch which modifies nsMovemailIncomingServer.{h,cpp} and nsMovemailService.cpp)

Thunderbird doesn't auto-get based on the timed interval or at startup.  It only gets the mail from /var/spool/mail/username when the GetMail button is pressed; and then correctly puts it into username/.thunderbird/*.default/Mail/localhost/Inbox    But to get more mail later, I have to press GetMail again.

Can you confirm that this is indeed fixed in the 3.0b4 source that was officially released.  If not, can you point me to *a* source where it does work.

The issue you see there is bug 480945, a separate bug. The issue described in this bug has been fixed, as your comment indicates (pressing Get Mail causes mail to be downloaded, i.e., it was fixed).
