There's a good plugin to help combat comment spam on WordPress, which is available here:

I'd like to get this installed on the MDC weblogs (DevNews and WebWatch, plus the future MDC Weblog for which I'll be filing another bug RSN).

I can actually handle installing this myself if you would prefer, I'll just have to have write access to the wp-content/plugins/ directories (if I don't already have it).
plugins installed. I think everything else can be done from the web interface.
