The only difference between the two files is that bad.html has an extra <li> element in the <ul> in the #news div. I imagine that the difference in the rendering of these files is a bug. the float containing the validator buttons has "margin-bottom: 50%". ???? from http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/box.html#margin-properties <percentage> The percentage is calculated with respect to the width of the generated box's containing block. Note that this is true for 'margin-top' and 'margin-bottom' as well. Based on that, it should have the large blank area at the bottom. The reason it doesn't sometimes is bug 249982. Resolving INVALID
