http://www.mozilla.org/quality/help/ has some helpful hints on how to run nightlies.  the documentation should be expanded to include how to run a nightly alongside your regular firefox installation by:
downloading a zipped nightly from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/ and installing it into a separate directory
setting MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1
starting with firefox -P and creating a "trunk" profile
starting in the future with firefox -p trunk
