Bug 328343 (Multiple search toolbars) is similar, but completion of this enhancement request would resolve that one as well.

The problem: People frequently search multiple sites. To do this, they have to select the engine of choice using the engine drop-down and then enter their search term. Alternately searching multiple sites takes longer than it needs to.

The solution: Create Search Engine Targets, which are icons on the toolbar. When a Search Engine Target is clicked, the term inside the search box is searched on that search engine.

Example: I regularly search Google, Wikipedia, and IMdb. Once this enhancement is implemented, I can place a Search Engine Target for each of these sites next to my Search Box. To search a site, I simply type my search terms into the existing Search Box and then click on the search engine of choice.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
This is an enhancement request.
Right now the little arrow at the right of the search engine starts a drop down menu to select another search engine.
It would suffice if selecting a menu entry would directly start the search with the other engine instead of just selecting another engine.
Setting the other engine could be done by context menu in the drop down menu (as on a bookmark).

Right now after the search you have to reset your default engine which I always forget.

Let's ask the UX team.

After thinking about this it would be a perfect thing for an extension. Having more then 10 search engines installed and trying to customize the toolbars will add a lot of clutter to the selection list.
