IMHO, the first time that a user visits a site with a RSS/Atom feed, Firefox should educate them about what "feeds" are, and how "Live Bookmarks" works.  

Here's a mock up notification dialog:

Whether it’s news from CNN and the BBC, or posts on your friend’s blog, the Web is updated continually. Firefox’s Live Bookmarks feature automatically keeps track of these updates for you, so you always know when new content has been added to your favorite sites.

With Live Bookmarks, the content comes to you. Instead of constantly checking Web pages for changes and additions, a Live Bookmark delivers updates from a RSS/Atom feed to you as soon as they are available.

You can also choose to use your own RSS/Atom reader such as Google Reader, Bloglines, or My Yahoo.

When RSS or Atom feeds are available, a orange RSS icon will appear in the Location Bar like this:

Click on the orange RSS icon there to view and subscribed to the available feeds.

If no one has taken this up by now, I'm afraid its prospects are dim.

Seems like an awful lot of text for a dialog box in the browser, but might be good for http://wiki.mozilla.org/.
