User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.6) Gecko/20060728 Firefox/1.5.0.6 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.6) Gecko/20060728 Firefox/1.5.0.6 I use a dialup connection. Recently I activated the Software Security Device's master password. Even though I have Thunderbird configured to only check for mail when I manually request it, and I have sofware updates completely disabled, once I've started Thunderbird up, but have not yet requested mail, and so it should not yet have connected to the mail server, it periodically asks for the password for the security device. If I Cancel the request it just comes back again after the delay. So it appears to me that the unchecked "Check for mail every 10 minutes" is still running a timer and every 10 minutes it is making an attempt to get the password in anticipation of the fetch mail that it never does (because it has been disabled). Dialup may have nothing to do with it, perhaps it would happen with an always-on connection as well, if mail checks were disabled? -- Doug Reproducible: Always

Reporter, does this still occur with the latest supported 2.0.0.x / Shredder trunk nightlies? (1.5.0.x is now end-of-life and the latest supported 2.0.0.x is 2.0.0.17)

(hm, this rings a bell) Doug, do you still see this problem using version 6 or higher? if you no longer see problem on newer release, please change resolution to WORKSFORME. if you do see the problem on newer release, please update the bug with details.

I'm running 6.0.2 and it still happens. Sometimes I've thought I should get the source and fix it myself, but I guess I don't really care enough to take the trouble. I've lived with it for several years, you might as well just close it. I don't think the details have changed. If I disregard the first prompt, an additional one comes up over the first one, and I suspect they'd keep piling up forever. And it's looking like we might finally get high speed internet in our (isolated) area soon, so then I might not care anymore.

on rereading this, it's not clear to me that "Software Security Device"/master password is a key component of this issue. Doug, If you remove the master password, does Thunderbird behave correctly and never check for new mail unless you force it? It doesn't try to dialup when the timer goes off, it just asks for the password. I enter the password and the prompt goes away and that's it, no more prompts. It hasn't tried to dialup for many versions of TB. I think they tried to fix it, but didn't get it quite right. Instead of disabling the timer which is the root of the problem, they just disabled the actual dialup attempt, leaving intact the timer and the password request. That's my guess from the symptoms. Especially since if I disregard the password request, another one comes up on top of the first one when the timer goes off again. I also changed the version to 7, or is that supposed to reflect when it was first seen to occur?

(In reply to Doug Hockin from comment #7) > I also changed the version to 7, or is that supposed to reflect when it was > first seen to occur? Doug, If it's a regression, it's somewhat helpful to have version be where first seen

I made the original report back in 2006, so whatever was the version back then? I've always kept up to date version wise.

I've high speed internet via wireless for about a year now and so don't use a modem any more. Hence no way for me to test this. Personally I've no objection to closing it.

THanks for the update. There are bug reports about mail check, so I think we can rely on those.
