User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win 9x 4.90; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061010 Firefox/2.0
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win 9x 4.90; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061010 Firefox/2.0

The summary says it all. I do plenty of JDK development, but after I installed Firefox 2.0 java applets simply don't load. The area where they should be is blank (although the Adblock tab is still there). about:plugins shows the same configuration for Java that I had before Firefox 2, and my JRE and JDK builds are still installed and functioning perfectly.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Get an old, dying, badly working Windows ME system that has overlived its usefulness
2. Use it for a few years to allow registry bloat and DLL hell to set in, make sure nothing other than Notepad and Firefox work
3. Install JDK and JRE
3 1/2. Install Firefox 2.0
4. Try to load a Java page

Actual Results:
Java applets show up as blank space

Expected Results:
Java applets load normally
WFM with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061010 Firefox/2.0

Have you tried:

- a reinstall in a new empty directory
- Firefox's safe-mode to exclude extension problems
- a new profile?

WFM too, please head over to http://forums.mozillazine.org/ for support
