I use TB with IMAP server (dovecot on Linux). When new message arrives, TB shows popup saying "me@me.com has XYZ new messages". The bug is that when single message arrives, TB sometimes shows "2 messages" and sometimes entirely bogus number like "43 messages" - even though only one message is actually new. The case with 2 is much more frequent for me than with other numbers, but both happen.

Are you using filters -- either server-side or client-side -- that might be affecting the message count?  That is, could there be a bunch of filtered messages that you've missed?

xref bug 138631 , altho that symptom is (I think) the opposite of what you're reporting.

What information are you showing in the alert -- that is, what are your settings under  Tools | Options | General, "When new messages arrive",

No additional data from "Customize" box displayed. I do have junk filters and also other filters, will verify if it is the cause next time it happens.

Reporter, does this issue still occur in the latest supported 2.0.0.x / Shredder trunk nightlies?

(1.5.0.x is now end-of-life and the latest supported 2.0.0.x is now 2.0.0.17)

Looks like it's caused by the spam filters - i.e. the count is the number of messages received before the filters worked. I guess I would expect the count to be the same as the amount of new messages that I can see in my Inbox (it's not very useful to know that I got 20 more spams).
Per comment 4, this seems like a junk mail + new message notifier problem. There are more than a few bugs on this issue, but I'm not sure which one is the best to dupe to. Bug 272125 looks like the best option, though.
