Details

Proper design should not have SQL floating around in controller logic.  To help ensure security and maintainability around data access we should centralize all manual SQL queries in models.  This should reduce the overall amount of code.

This isn't going to be 100% avoidable and I'd rather spend this time fixing our tests.
