Mail clients have had a similar option for awhile - "flagging" a message, or "starring" a message in GMail, usually indicates the need for followup/future interest. If a star is going to be used to quickly bookmark something/represent bookmarks vs tags, we'll need some other way of distinguishing a particular bookmark as "interesting"... and by the looks of the mockup here: http://wiki.mozilla.org/Places:User_Interface/Organizer/i1 and comments in dev.apps.firefox, adding a separate "flag" icon seems like it'd just clutter up the UI further.

So a few other possible options:

- Highlighting an item by changing the background color of the row.
  If the background colors of alternating rows will be reflected in the new UI as they are in the current BM, changing the background color of a row would make things even busier.

- Highlighting an item by changing the text color of the row
  Similar to Thunderbird's "labels," the text color changes according to some setting a user sets on the item. Con: occasionally difficult to read, or difficult to distinguish from surrounding black text.

- Changing the color of the star? To show that it's a special bookmark
  Con: confusing, and interferes with the expected toggling behavior of starring an item.

Just kidding - I was under the impression from mockups that a star was simply going to be used for adding/removing bookmarks, so I thought star = bookmark and bookmark = starred.. my mistake. Are all starred items still stored as bookmarks, or can items be starred independently of being bookmarked?

This is actually accurate, across all of the places UIs I've been trying to establish that star == bookmark.  What is new is that not all bookmarks appear in primary UI (in the bookmarks toolbar, bookmarks menu).

I've been thinking that we might want to ship with some pre-populated tags to help demonstrate various ways that tags can be useful, and these could potentially include things like "read later."

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".

In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body   contains   places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.

Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
