when selecting outgoing smtp auth using  SSL when a username and password is specified (but this info is not really correct), thunderbird doesn't prompt with an error silently but silently sends null values.

Sujay, how do you know that thunderbird sends null values ? Could you reproduce the issue with a recent build (something like thunderbird 3.0b2) and follow the instructions at https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging and provide us with a smtp log ?
