this problem could be fixed just by making a program that would reformat the old email it could even be a command line program but what ever it is it must be able to access any old user folder on any hard drive

So the best way is probably to create all the mail accounts you also had in your old profile. Now you can look up in the Account Manager under "Server Settings" at the bottom of the window which folder is currently used for that account. Now you can either copy the old Inbox, etc. files in that folder or click on "Browse..." and point MailNews to the old folder.
All this did was to ask me to slect a profile to inport from there were no profiles to slect face it the new email format is very badly broken ( the old format was working just fine hasn't anyone ever tould you if it isn't broken DON'T FIX IT ! ) As far as I can tell there is no way to inport my old email Your change in format has cost me 7 years of email

The mail format has not changed...and what import dialog? If you followed my instrucsions then it will just ask you to select the folder where the mail files are in. Your mails are not lost at all. You can also try reading http://kb.mozillazine.org/Combining_two_profiles (your old profile would be the first profile and your new profile the second one) or http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_your_profile_folder#Method_2. Maybe that will help you more...
