40043 - Impossible to post news posting with *very* long subject

I just tried posting a news posting to this newsgroup:
dk.test
with the subject (HOLD ON):
"very long subject very long subject very long subject very long subject very 
long subject very long subject very long subject very long subject very long 
subject very long subject very long subject very long subject very long subject 
very long subject very long subject very long subject very long subject very 
long subject very long subject very long subject very long subject very long 
subject very long subject very long subject very long subject very long subject 
very long subject very long subject very long subject very long subject very 
long subject very long subject very long subject very long subject very long 
subject very long subject very long subject very long subject very long subject 
very long subject"

After pressing Send I'm getting an alert:
"Sending of message failed."

Shouldn't it be possible to send a news porsing with this long a subject. No 
problem when sending a mail with the same subject to my IMAP account...

interesting bug!


the subject you reported works in 4.x, but fails in 6.0, so we must be doing
something wrong.

with a *really* long subject, 4.x pops up an error (437, subject too long) which
it gets from the server, I need to make sure 6.0 does that.

With Mozilla and for the newsgroup dk.test on news.inet.tele.dk the magic number 
is 989.

If you send a posting from Mozilla that have more than 990 chars in the subject 
you get an error. 899 chars works just fine.

With Netscape 4.73 I can fine send a posting with 990 chars. In Netscape 4.73 
the limit is 1000. 999 chars in subject goes fine, 1000 you get "line too long".

PS: remember that news postings have to have a body.

clearing milestone, m17 and m18 are meaningless now.  these need to be triages
along with the rest.

Seth, can it be that we're storing the subject in a string that only supports
like 255 bytes before sending, and because the string is too small we fail?

In netscape.public.test, I tried to post two messages. One with the subject:

"very long subject very long subject very long subject very long subject very
long subject very long subject very long subject very long subject very long
subject very long subject very long subject very long subject very long subject

subject very long subject very long subject very long subject very long subject

very long subject"

and another with this same subject, but two times after each other (doubled).

The messages went through fine, no assertions, warnings or anything and I could
read it when posted.

Resolving as WORKSFORME.

verified worksforme:
See my obnoxiously long postings (from [e-mail]) in n.test on
news.mozilla.org.

However; Seth, do you want this bug to stand for us showing the 437 error?

If so, we can either morph this bug or I can open a new one, and verify this as
worksforme.
