Fresh Fedora Core 8 install, fonts look great. Install the package wqy-bitmap-fonts-0.8.1-8.fc8.noarch.rpm (part of FC8) and the fonts in Firefox go all goofy. Looks like we pick a fixed bitmap font for every font, or something. See screenshots.

Check default fonts with "fc-match -v sans" and "fc-match -v sans-serif".

(In reply to comment #4) > jst: is this package installed by default? No, it's not installed by default, or at least it wasn't for me. I installed it when tracking down an unrelated font issues (nothing to do with Firefox at all) and then realized the fonts in Firefox were screwed up and tracked it down to this package.

The RPM for the font adds the file /etc/fonts/conf.d/85-wqy-bitmapsong.conf Source: http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache:zwu97hjVhWUJ:rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/fedora/updates/7/i386/wqy-bitmap-fonts-0.8.1-6.fc7.noarch.html+wqy-bitmap-fonts&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us&client=firefox-a Could you post the contents of that file?

This is a bug is exactly that broken conf file. Filed here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=381311 The conf file obviously makes fontconfig use this font for English AND CJK langs.
