Fresh Fedora Core 8 install, fonts look great. Install the package wqy-bitmap-fonts-0.8.1-8.fc8.noarch.rpm (part of FC8) and the fonts in Firefox go all goofy. Looks like we pick a fixed bitmap font for every font, or something. See screenshots.

Check default fonts with "fc-match -v sans" and "fc-match -v sans-serif".

No, it's not installed by default, or at least it wasn't for me. I installed it when tracking down an unrelated font issues (nothing to do with Firefox at all) and then realized the fonts in Firefox were screwed up and tracked it down to this package.
This is a bug is exactly that broken conf file.  Filed here:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=381311

The conf file obviously makes fontconfig use this font for English AND CJK langs.
Not much we can do about that I guess? Marking INVALID based on the above comments. Thanks for looking into this Behdad!
