I've been using tags with Places for quite a while now and I think that the initial focus for the dialog should be in the "Tags" box rather than "Name". I want to add tags to my bookmarks 100% of the time, but I almost never change the "Name", so this slows down the tagging process significantly.
I'm conflicted about this.

On the pro side, I agree with Deb that users are far more likely to edit tags than they are to edit titles, whether or not they're aware of tags. I don't think a lot of people rename their bookmarks.

On the con side, editing the title has been the default behaviour for a while, and is a concept understood by all users, whereas tags are not.

We definitely want to optimize the bookmark & tag experience, I'm just wondering if this is the best way to do it as opposed to providing some other gesture.
If people enter a title in the tags field, it seems like they'll mostly get decent behaviour anyway, though they'll also get tags for "the" or "of" and maybe some punctuation weirdness. Search will still work OK, etc.
Except that they won't have a title in their bookmarks menu, and if they're playing on FF2 instinct then they won't be using awesomebar to find things, I suppose! I rescind my "OK, etc."
Even if people don't currently change the titles of their bookmarks often, I think it is important that we make that very easy, because it is primarily the title that users will be later searching against and recognizing in awesome bar results. The better the titles, the easier and more powerful the awesome bar is. Personally I find the current interface of second click on the star, type the title and hit enter to be delightfully convenient.

In future releases I think we should consider a keyboard shortcut followed by this type of interface for tagging:

Resolving WONTFIX per the preponderance of opinion being that the current behaviour in that dialog is optimal. I agree with Alex that something like bug 434946 is a better way to solve this.

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".

In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.

Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
