Hi, what are your suggestions for spanish services?
Web links for Work: Google Docs, RememberTheMilk.com, LinkedIn, Clipmarks Add-on, built-in spellcheck
I have heard that LinkedIn may not work as well as Xing in Europe - would this be true for Spanish?

Web links for Learning: Wikipedia, Topix, HowStuffWorks.com, Answers Add-on, customize the search bar
Can we replace Wikipedia with Spanish Wikipedia?

Play: YouTube, Hype Machine, Miro, PicLens add-on, use Add-ons Manager to customize Firefox
Would Lastfm be better than HypeMachine for Spanish?

Connect: Craig's List, Yelp, Facebook, Me.dium Add-on, subscribe to RSS feeds
Is Facebook popular in Spanish? if not would Orkut be better?

To be honest, none of us seem to know about LinkedIn replacements. I for one haven't ever visited Xing. The rest of links and add-ons are OK.

Sure. We are also discussing some loosely related replacements for Topix.

I've proposed in out internal mailing list Jamendo and Magnatunes as possible replacements (again, loosely related to the original).

I'd say that MySpace is more popular than Facebook, but I may be wrong. We are also thinking of replacements for Yelp.

I know we seem to be behind schedule, although we have talked a bit in our internal mailing list. I really hope we can come to a final decission no later than Tuesday.

Google Docs is OK.
RememberTheMilk: i never use it, but it seems ok and it's in Spanish
Linked in: ok, but it is in English and I don't know another community

Obviously: http://es.wikipedia.org/
Answers Add-on could be yahoo answers, because it is in spanish

Mmmm, I think so. Last.fm is used widely in Spain.

Orkut was used more in the past, but in the present I think MySpace could be better.
Work: well let's try Xing - Pascal might you know if this is used in Spain? seems like a better option than LinkedIn

Play: Last.fm ok -- let me know if you still want Jamendo or Magnatunes

Connect: ok on MySpace or Orkut - i will see if i can get more information on that (popularity)

Comment #2, thanks on timing :)
The profesional networks I knew in Spain were Neurona and eConozco, they were both recently bought by Xing, so it seems like Xing is the new market leader. I opened an account and it actually is a pretty good site.
I think that Tuenti is more popular in Spain than MySpace, the order would be:

1. Tuenti
2. MySpace
3. Facebook

For music I think that Lasfm.es and Jamendo are very popular and they are in Spanish.

If we believe Alexa [1], the order would be exactly the reverse: es.facebook.com, closely followed by es.MySpace.com, and the closed beta of Tuenti.com with nearly no visits.

[1]http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details/masters.org?site0=es.facebook.com&site1=tuenti.com&site2=es.myspace.com&y=r&z=3&h=300&w=610&u%5B%5D=es.facebook.com&u%5B%5D=tuenti.com&u%5B%5D=es.myspace.com&x=2008-04-20T23%3A20%3A25.000Z&check=www.alexa.com&signature=2ZXKxO6gIbOCTy3EmIUlUgxuCoc%3D&range=3m&size=Medium

I don't think that including a recommendation to a closed beta site is a sensible thing to do in the Getting Started page of Firefox.

Just to avoid any misunderstanding, Nukeador is actually referring to Lastfm.es (a parked fake domain lasfm.es exists). :-)

I'd say we should settle for definitive picks on the next 24 hours or so, wait for approval, and provide the page in the bug 428145.
we have a bit more time than 24 hours, but i agree we should move forward with a decision as quickly as possible

We should have a total of 3 weblinks for each section so having Tuenti, MySpace and Facebook is all of the same networking type site is too many. Are there any options for a Classified service like Craig's List. I've seen http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/es -- would that be ok? and for Yelp - user generated reviews type website, any ideas? there must be some interesting options?

here is summary of changes I have thus far:
Work: Replace LinkedIn with Xing
Learn: Replace Wikipedia with Spanish version,
Play: Replace Hype Machine with LastFm (spanish, Replace Miro with Jamendo
Connect: Tuenti, MySpace or Facebook for Facebook (not sure yet)

I agree with all other parts, but:

Connect: Tuenti, MySpace or Facebook for Facebook (not sure yet)

Tuenti has 1year old and it is for "twenty" people, so is mostly used by a large community of young people. Maybe 17 -> 27 years. It only communicates you with friends, tagging photos and uploading them. Post comments in others dashboards and send PM.

So *I think* MySpace could be the first community (not only people, it has "famous" people, music groups, theatres...).
so it's between Tuenti and MySpace - i'll see if we can have more than 3. otherwise let's go with more broadly appealing - sounds like myspace to me

I think MySpace will be more helpful for people than tuenti, so I think we will put:
1-MySpace
2-Facebook
just to be clear you don't have to use FaceBook, especially if it's not relevant in your language :)

I'm working in a draft of the page hosted in Google Docs.

> here is summary of changes I have thus far:

Replaced. However, each link has an accompanying image, and I don't know if one exists for Xing nor how we should provide one (dimensions, content, etc.). Provisionally, I've renamed the image file to "sites-xing.png", following the naming scheme, but please keep in mind this is currently a 404. I've also reworded the comment to paraphrasing the slogan in Xing's Spanish main page ("Una herramienta en la red para estrechar relaciones entre profesionales del mundo entero", approx. "A networking tool to strength relations among professionals all around the world").

> Learn: Replace Wikipedia with Spanish version,

Replaced with http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portada, which is the link from main Wikipedia (BTW, why do we need to change it if en-US points to www.wikipedia.org instead of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page?).

Since Spanish Wikipedia runs only about 350,000 articles, I've reworded the comment about it from "Millions of articles..." to "Hundreds of thousands articles..." (in spanish, of course).

> Play: Replace Hype Machine with LastFm (spanish, Replace Miro with Jamendo

Same than with Xing: sites-lastfm.png has to be provided, and I've replaced the comment about the site with "Escucha música en Last.fm y aprenderá tus gustos, te propondrá música nueva y te informará de conciertos" ("Listen music in Last.fm and it will learn about your preferences, propose you with new music and let you know about concerts").

Regarding Craig's List, I've put your suggestion (http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/es). For Yelp someone proposed in our internal mailing list this site: http://11870.com/ I think it fits Yelp's spirit very well, so I'm replacing Yelp with it, since we are so short of time. If someone says anything against it, I will be happy to modify the page.

Of course, again we need to provide a sites-11870.png image, and I've replaced the comment with the slogan of the site: "Comparte con tus amigos opiniones, fotos y vídeos de todo tipo de servicios" ("Share with your friends opinions, photos and videos about any type of services").

Finally, I've replaced Facebook with MySpace. As always, we need a sites-myspace.png image, and I've changed the associated comment to their own description of the site: "Una comunidad en línea que te permite conocer a los amigos de tus amigos" ("An online community that lets you know the friends of your friends").

Guillermo, Nukeador, please comment if you agree with all the above.

Mic, please let us know if you agree with changes in comments about each site, and what do we need to do regarding images.

We're coming to a successful end of the story. :-)
i agree. Pascalc do you know about the images question? if not maybe JSlater knows?

Could you explain the images question a little bit more? I want to make sure I give you the answer you need.
John, we need to take the logos from the linked sites, put them on mozilla.com and change links accordingly.
Pascal and I IM'd about this earlier...if he can get me a list of the logos we need I'll see if I can get the necessary assets for the various versions of this page.

However, I'm also totally fine with removing the logos from any version of this page proves to be too difficult. I think that's a very acceptable option if we need to go that route.
In case it may be useful:

URL for Xing logo:

URL for Last.fm logo:

URL for 11870 logo:

URL for MySpace logo:

Uploaded the draft file for anyone curious about it. :-)

Once we get your green light, I will attach it to bug 428145.
pascalc - can you reveiw, i'm ok for the choices :)
Ricardo, you have removed the link to googledoc in the href link:

<h4><a href="" class="external"><img src="/img/tignish/gettingstarted/sites-googledocs.png" alt="Google Docs" height="65" width="110" />Google Docs en español</a></h4>

The rest is ok
I did well naming it "Draft". :-) Thanks for catching it, Pascal.

Since it should be OK now, I'm also attaching the file to bug 428145.

Now that es-ES version has been committed to SVN, can I close this bug?
