Happens to me exactly the same -so far it has happened every time and exactly when I close GMail. It happens only on my home machine with WinXP, however at work on WinXP it is stable(er). Also on Ubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04) it works fine.
I'm using Windows XP SP3. On Firefox 2.0.0.14 does not happens.
On Windows Vista Home Premium, Firefox 3.0.1 does not happens.
It has been happening to me regularly. However, I've noticed that it's necessary for gmail tab to have been open for a significant period of time. Closing the tab can take minutes, and when the tab finally disappears, Firefox often displays a dialog asking me if I want to continue or terminate a script that had been running for a long time. This occurs even in 3.0.10.
It may depend on the OS you're using and how many programs are open and, maybe, how much time you stay logged in. When it happened to me, I had 512 MB of RAM. Now I have 3 GB.
I HAVE noticed that how long I have stayed logged in matters. However, I expect to be able to log out quickly no matter how long I stay logged in. (At least, it shouldn't take minutes.)
