The embedded video player relies heavily on javascript for swfobject / embed and many controls, along with communication between the player and our backend.  The QA department has found that the player's controls will not function with the new build of Firefox (3.0 soon to be released).  We support player 8.0 on up and all of these versions will not function within Firefox 3.0.  Currently, though all browsers and versions DO function.  The button action themselves are your most basic action (i.e. myMC.onPress).  We also have other flash elements on the page that DO work in Firefox 3.0 however these do not rely on javascript.



Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Use latest build of FireFox 3.0
2. go to http://www.forbes.com and try controlling video
3. click on buttons / scrub bar
Actual Results:  
no buttons / scrub bar work.

Expected Results:  
all buttons (play / pause, scrub, mute, etc) will work in all previous versions of Firefox and other browsers.

All buttons on the little video on the right side appear to work here, using Shockwave Flash 9.0 r124. Maybe Mac-only?

DiD you test with 9.0 R124 (type about:plugins as URL to see the currently installed plugins) ?
Note: The build-in flash installer in Firefox is currently broken unless Macromedia/Adobe releases a new XPI. You must install the plugin with the external installer from Adobe.

The QA department tests on both PC and Mac, down to Flash 8.0.   My guess is that most of our users are at Flash 9, however we still have to account for the corporate few stuck at Flash 8.   The odd thing is that the other flash elements on the page, which are simpler than the video player, work in FF3.

We don't support Flash 8, it may working or not.
For Flash 9.0 we support only the latest Version of it, there are many reasons for this including many security holes in older versions. A security hole in pre 9.0r124 is used at the moments to infect systems.
I also don't know if Flash8 is still updated to fix all the security holes.

If flash 9 is working and Flash 8 not then only adobe/macromedia can update flash8 to fix it.

Are there old flash versions in Mozilla Firefox\Plugins or in C:\Documents and Settings\xxx\Application Data\Mozilla\Plugins (talking about Windows)?
Firefox will first use those plugins, even if they're old, and only if those folders are empty or absent, Firefox will go looking for a plugin in system32 where Adobe has installed its latest version. See Bug 435993.
Indeed the buttons don't work correctly with flash 8.
If you right click on the flash movie you can see the flash version.

Oh, I agree that it works fine in FP 9.0 on up.  The main issue (as Ria had confirmed) was that FP 8.0 now doesn't work.  The current build of FireFox (2.0.0.14 on a Mac) works perfectly.  Once FireFox 3 is released, will the user get a message about upgrading - as in a pop up message saying that there's a new version and click to upgrade?

No, AFAIK it's the site that detects whether the visitor is using the desired version. Hopefully some previous sites already told their visitor to upgrade. Maybe a simple line that some features only work with the latest version with be sufficient?

You should include a flash detection script and offer an upgrade to flash9 or flash10 but be sure that this detection doesn't fail if someone comes with a Flash v11.
