Example: The error "AUS: Update XML File Not Found (404)" is shown, but the real error is "AUS: Update could not be verified in a secure way" (bug 401292)

I would suggest that an "unknown error" is added and used for cases where we don't know about the error, and I suggest adding a specific error message about the invalid certificate issue.

I also suggest that for automatic updates not initiated by the user, we should display an error message, so that the user could know something is terribly wrong instead of thinking they have the newest security updates. But that may be another bug.

As far as "wrong error messages are often displayed"... this should be fixed on trunk by bug 451164. If there are still problems please reopen this bug and post the errors that are incorrect so we can take another look at them. Thanks.

I just tried the latest tinderbox build. I edited checkCert to always throw the exception in the last line of the function. The error message is now changed to "AUS: Update XML File Malformed (200)", but that is still not the error that happened.

I've found this bug today while searching for checkCert but not for application update. Three weeks ago I've already filed that as bug 471889. There are some more information available. I'ld tend to mark this as dupe.

checkCert is no longer used on Windows and won't be used on Linux and Mac after the dependent bugs are fixed.
